Analysis of Lithium Battery Materials by Scanning Probe Microscopies
Different analytic techniques can be used to obtain local chemical or physical information about the battery interphase forming during the electrode cycling. Most of the electrodes are composite materials and therefore, their surfaces are neither homogeneous nor do they react uniformly at the nanoscale. Due to the intercalation, incorporation or plating of Li+ cations, not only locally different reactions can occur but also physical changes like swelling or the formation of cracks and holes are likely. Therefore, analytic tools that are capable of stepwise scanning a certain area of the electrode to visualize these inhomogeneities are of high value to obtain insights of electrode behaviour at the local scale.
