Research Project

Carbene Corrosion Inhibition
This project will investigate how different carbenes can adhere to multiple stainless steels and will eventually test how the carbene coating works to prevent against corrosion. The first step will be to choose the stainless steels from the 7 kinds provided from Yolanda Hedberg, after which the chosen few will be prepared through cutting, grinding, and polishing processes. Once the steel is appropriately prepared, the carbene will be coated onto the steel using self-assembly techniques. If successful, the carbene coated steels will be tested using a tribocorrosion instrument, electrochemical methods, and the surface will be explored by SEM, XPS, and possibly PXRD.
