Research Project

Hydrogen diffusion and embrittlement in steel pipelines
In a collaborative project with NRCan (National Resources Canada), the study revolves around the diffusion of high-pressure hydrogen gas through steel pipelines. Currently, steel pipelines are utilized on the Canadian territory to allow the transport of natural gas. In a sustainability path, this natural gas would be replaced by hydrogen.
The project aims to study the consequences of the interaction between steel and hydrogen, such as hydrogen embrittlement inside the steel microstructure. Through sample preparation, electrochemical characterization and simulations, progress in understanding hydrogen diffusion can be achieved, such that the precise location of failure in steel alloys is known.
