Developing Oil-Immersed Scanning Micropipette Contact Method (OI-SMCM) for Investigation of Aluminium Alloy Corrosion
Scanning micropipette contact method (SMCM) can extract spatially resolved electrochemical information at the microscale. The application of SMCM in corrosion was limited by the droplet evaporation in air. Immersed under a layer of mineral oil on the sample surface, the droplet gained a high stability, allowing for a long-term scan. The corrosion potentials extracted from the OI-SMCM map revealed the difference between the matrix and intermetallics. We also found that the commonly used Ag/AgCl wire quasi-reference counter electrode caused corrosion potential drift due to the Ag+ diffusion to the end of micropipette. This can be eliminated by extending the distance between the Ag/AgCl wire and the end of micropipette or using a leak-free reference electrode. OI-SMCM can greatly expand the application of SMCM in corrosion. Further optimization of OI-SMCM is in progress.
